Details in the Trifid Nebula M20

This AAT picture shows details near the center of the Trifid nebula M20, including a compact cluster of newly formed, young stars, the hottest of which now excite the nebula's gas to shine in a region of 40 light years in diameter. This cluster is found near the location where the Trifid Nebula's dust lanes apparently come together.

This picture was obtained from the same photographic plates as the previous one, but faint details of the surrounding faint nebulae enhanced by special techniques (unsharp masking and photographic amplifying).
