Friedrich Hahn's Discovery of the Central Star of M57

The following report was published by Friedrich von Hahn in 1800 on his discovery of "changes" in the Ring Nebula M57 (Hahn 1800):

4. Einige Beobachtungen über Mira Ceti, über die Nebelflecke in der Leyer und der Hydra, ingleichen eine neue Entdeckung des Hrn. D. Herschel, angestellt und mitgetheilt von Hrn. Erb-Landmarschall v. Hahn zu Remplin

Ich finde in dem berühmten Sternenringe bey Beta in der Leyer *) merkliche Veränderungen. Vor einigen Jahren war das Innere des Ringes so klar, daß ich mit dem 20f Reflektor in dessen Mitte, ein teleskopisches Sternchen unterscheiden konnte. Jetzt zeigen sich durch eben dieses Fernrohr, schwache feine Wolken und der kleine Stern ist gar nicht sichtbar.Eine Veränderung ist sicher vorgefallen. Es kann aber auch seyn, daß der Ring seine Stelle verändert hat, und nur auf dem unendlich viel weiter als der Ring entfernten Hintergrunde, der durchsichtige Ring anders erscheint.

I find in the famous stellar ring near Beta in Lyra *) notable changes. Some years ago the interior of the ring was so clear, that with the 20f Reflector, in the middle, I could distinguish a telescopic starlet. Currently, in just the same telescope, faint and fine clouds are showing up, and the small star is not visible at all. A change has certainly occurred. It may also be that the ring has changed its place, and only on the background infinitely more distant than the ring, the transparent ring appears differently.

So, Hahn has apparently observed the central star around 1795, but could not see it in later years.
