Messier 5

[AAT image of M5 (JPG)]

This photograph of glubular cluster M5 has been obtained by David Malin with the 3.9-meter Anglo-Australian Telescope. It shows that the instrument resolves well the brighter stars even in the center of this cluster. The stars in this cluster differ in color: while the brightest stars are yellow and orange ("red giants"), most of the fainter stars appear blue. This blueish hue dominates the overall appearance of the cluster, contrary to a longly hold misbelief that globulars should look red.
