Discovered by Caroline Herschel on May 12, 1784.
Independently found by Karl Ludwig Harding before 1824.

After its discovery by Caroline Herschel, open cluster NGC 6819 was not seen or cataloged by William Herschel. It was next seen and independently discovered by Karl Ludwig Harding before 1824, and by John Herschel on July 31, 1831.
