Akashmitra Association conducted the Messier Marathon of 2009 on 21-22 March, from Pokhri near Bhimashankar, about 105 km north of Pune. We discussed whether we should hold it on 21st-22nd or 28-29th. Some morning objects could be flooded by the Moon on the former, but some evening objects would be impossible on the latter date. We decided to take a chance and chose 21-22 March as the date. We chose the same venue as we had for 2007; but some new lights in the village of Pokhri greeted us, spoiling the western horizon. Absolutely no clouds this time, though! We missed a few evening objects, but the rest of the sequence was a breeze till we encountered the Moon near M72-73. The final scores were: Harshad Abhyankar, 4.5" Newt: 105 (missed 110, 74, 72, 73, 52) (Harshad also spotted 74 other NGC objects for a night's total of 179 objects.) Jayesh Mutha, 6" Newt: 102 (missed 110, 74, 53, 64, 56, 92, 72, 73) Kshitija Kelkar, 4.5" Newt: 101 (missed 32, 110, 33, 74, 77, 68, 102, 72, 73) Dr.Vishwanath Jigjinni, 8" Schmidt-Cass: 91 Abha Vaishampayan, 6" Newt: 84 (also spotted 15 other NGCs.) Akshay Soman, Kabir Sahane, Sumedh Kulkarni and Zameer Khan: 55. (They shared two 4" and 6" scopes. This was their first Marathon and they scored 55 objects in a collaborative effort.) regards, - Harshad Abhyankar. ---
