Lyman Spitzer, Jr. (June 26, 1914 - March 31, 1997)
Lyman Spitzer, Jr. was born in Toledo, Ohio on June 26, 1914 the son of a
prominent businessman.
Lyman Spitzer, Jr. was honored during his lifetime with the Bruce Medal of the
Astronomical Society of the Pacific for 1973.
Posthumous honors include naming the Spitzer
Space Telescope (formerly SIRTF) after him.
Asteroid (2160) Spitzer, previously designated 1956 RL, was discovered on
September 7, 1956 at Brooklyn by Indiana University staff. Other provisional
designations had been 1956 SJ, 1966 RN, 1971 UV1, and 1976 SX2.
