The Ring Nebula, M57 (NGC 6720) was imaged here with the Kitt Peak
4-meter Mayall telescope in September 1973. This is a true-color
picture using Ektachrome film at the prime focus of the telescope, by
Bill Schoening.

Four different views of the Ring Nebula M57, seen at four different
wavelengths (colors of light). These wavelengths are emitted by different
gases in varying physical states, so that the physical conditions in the
nebula can be studied from images like this one. These images have been
taken with the Kitt Peak 2.1-meter telescope in 1973, using the 40cm
Carnegie mage tube and an enhanced two inch photographic plate, by
Larry Goad.

N.A. Sharp has created this image from a deep CCD image made with the
Kitt Peak 2.1-meter telescope, obtained during the year 2000 Research
Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. The outer halo of a
considerable amount of matter is well shown in this image, together with
the nearby-situated background galaxy IC 1296 seen top right.
