Giant elliptical galaxy M49 in rthe Virgo Cluster of Galaxies, as photographed by Jan Wisniewski. This image was taken on May 29, 1998 from Sooke, BC, using a Cookbook 245 LDC CCD camera on Ultima 8 f/6.3 telescope, autoguided with Cookbook 211 LDC CCD camera on piggybacked 500mm f/8 telephoto lens. It is composed of W (3 x 4 min.) integrations processed with Multi245, AIP245, as well as PhotoPaint 8.
Martin Germano took this great image of M49 in May 2001 from the parking lot at Mt Pinos, California with his 14.5-inch f/5 Newtonian (stopped to f/6, 12-inch). This is a 110 minutes exposure on hypered Tech Pan 2415. M 49 is a large elliptical galaxy in Virgo with a faint outer halo. A satellite passed in front of M 49 during the exposure.
